Simon Stockhausen, born 5.6.1967 in Bensberg near Cologne, started his musical training – piano, saxophone, drums, synthesizer, composition – at the age of 5 years. His first performances were with his father Karlheinz (†) at the age of 12. After completing his A-levels in 1986 he was part of the Stockhausen-ensemble touring extensively to numerous countries.
A very productive cooperation started between him and his brother Markus Stockhausen in 1982, taking form in several ensembles (KAIROS / APARIS / POSSIBLE WORLDS) and leading to numerous CD-releases with companies such as EMI, ECM and LARGO, several Theater- and Film scores as well as two commissioned works for the Cologne philharmonic orchestra. Since 1991 Simon composed amongst others for the Ensemble Modern, for the Musikfabrik NRW, for the WDR-Big Band, the Biennale in Venice and the International Music Institute Darmstadt. Since 1998 he composes and arranges theater scores for numerous German theaters. Apart from his work as composer, Simon is active as live keyborder, saxophonist and live electronics technician in several formations, amongst others the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with which he debuted pieces by Heiner Goebbels und Peter Eötvös .
Simon also composed the scores to several documentary films (WDR/Arte/ZDF)of which the film debut Trip to Asia – The Quest for Harmony may be known to most. He also composed film scores for feature films by the Israeli director Amos Gitai.
